You ever ask yourself why you’re a believer? Like really question why you follow the principles that you follow when there are so many other options that get you where and what you want? –and usually faster-…?
Its ok, you don’t love Jesus any less by answering this question honestly. For most of us, the answer is “Yes.” The truth is that if we hadn’t experienced God’s love up close, in one way or another, we’d straight ditch patience, kindness, obedience and anything else that seemingly prolongs or prohibits what we think we want and need. Let’s be real…God’s way feels like “but why ?” majority of time. Lol. Being your classic sloppy-bun wearin’, pumpkin latte drinkin’ chick…I am usually “unable to can” with God’s way. I'm just being real because sometimes I just can't even... but I manage.
Like seriously though…there are reasons the Bible has scriptures like…
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
2 Chronicles 15:7 “But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”
God already knew that at some point in our walks, we’d all be over it. Why? Because we live in a world where everything we want is programmed into our minds as needs and it creates this pressure to do and have these things and lifestyles. I mean it’s so much of a pressure sometimes that we’ll do close to anything, even to our detriments, to get it all….to be it all…and to know it all.
Fun Fact: As believers, most of our winning will feel like losing; Not because God enjoys watching us suffer but because we’re SO human.
It’s easy to see what we lack –internally and externally- in a world where if you aren’t posting it, you aren’t succeeding; in a world that has raped the concept of “abundant living” and left it to desire superficial distractions that delay potential lessons-learned from spiritual voids once they are properly filled; in a world where if you aren’t living up to the expectations of people who too have fallen victim to the pressures of being everything but who they really are, you’re a failure.
I get it, its survival.
…but if we take a step back, we will realize that the only one whose standard holds any real weight preached peace over pressure, courage over conformity and truth over expectation. I can only imagine the pressure Jesus felt on His journey but I am living and breathing his personal pursuit of purpose through it all, and so are you. We aren’t losing because we don’t look like them. They aren’t winning because they look like the rest. It’s actually not a race…so we’re running out of breath and time for a marathon that won’t make us winners in the end.
Ease your mind and rid yourself of the pressure that dims your light. You shine because you look like YOU...in CHRIST. Your unique perspective brings visibility to people who are called to live out unique visions and your “not-so-cliché” story tells tales of just how far back God can reach to make all of your past dark moments relevant stepping stones for your present and future.
I’m learning that God says no or wait because He knows how much better we could have it if we were as relentless about trusting Him as we are about being the “next big this” or the “first big that;” wearing the latest “this” and dating the most qualified “him.”
Be encouraged and know that it’s all worth it. It doesn’t seem like it now but the peace you unknowingly have and are trying to give up doesn’t have to be felt after you’ve experienced turmoil first. Enjoy it now. Live it now and learn its name. You’re being sustained, you’re ok. You're on top.
Love you from the other side of the fire,
