Greeted by a crisp kiss of cold air on my forehead this morning, I knew exactly what time it was; somewhere in between late for work and "I gotta have it now." While standing in line, awaiting the highly anticipated Pumpkin Spice Latte, I suddenly became super deep in thought and I asked myself..."Why is it that the things with no importance or relevance to the call on our lives are the things we're willing to risk so much and stand in lines for?" Absent of complaint and foot tapping, we patiently and gracefully take steps towards becoming hypnotized consumers and caffeine addicts; sneaker heads and dumb smart phone users. To be quite honest, this latte wasn't even the greatest (she could have stirred it) but what could have happened in the time wasted standing in the line of someone else's success story could have been.
The issue is not in grabbing a coffee. Being a former barista and current nine to fiver, I understand the rush hour struggle and need for energy. The actual issue is that most of us have a hard time channeling that same "I gotta have it now" anticipation and "I'll wait out this line" endurance when it comes to our own success, purpose, gift and/or talent. We have AMAZING, WORLD CHANGING potential and yet, we struggle with maximizing that last five minutes between now and when we have to clock-in. We have trouble yearning and craving passion when it comes to our writing verses, painting pictures, playing cords, running laps, practicing scenes, studying for the LSAT; whatever it is that we do and desire to be.
I too am extremely gifted in building and experiencing the brands of others. I mean, by nature and the need to survive, we all are in some way, shape or form. -Duh- But every time we order a #5, purchase an app or sharpen the wings of our eyeliner (may the odds with that ever be in your favor), we are living and breathing someone else's dream. I mean OF COURSE...we all need the 8 ct. nugget -crispy with a lemonade, Instagram and pore-clogging, face staining make-up. (HA). I'm just noticing that as the weeks of my blogless platform have gone by, that I'm extremely distracted; extremely brainwashed and programmed to think that I absolutely "gotta have" these Pumpkin Spice Lattes and not...my own purpose.
Truth be told, if I could put complete blame on society and the mystery behind why the Pumpkin Spice Latte currently has 244, 807 hashtags, I would. However, we all usually have a part to play in our scraped knees, broken limbs and abnormally increased heart rates.
THE PART WE PLAY IS THE PART WE CAN CHANGE!
The part we play is the part we have authority to shift, shape and alter in our favor. The part we play is the part we can maximize and grow into something great. The part we play...is the part we don’t but "gotta have."
Writing is my passion. It's what I'm great at, it's what I do. It used to come so naturally and the words would just flow. It wasn't until I started standing in lines during my free-time that pulling words out of my head began to feel like pulling teeth. I started to lack the fire, the passion and the consistency I needed to write whole, cohesive pieces.... The bible tells us in Matthew 5:29 “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”
I was slowly oozing out my gift …BUT...I had my Pumpkin Spice Latte. I had caffeine which resulted in more energy to do more of nothing. I had become both one of the 200 million Pumpkin Spice Latte consumers of the decade AND one of the billions who waste time every day in the average 5 to 15 minute Starbucks experience...all in a sip. LIKE...WHEHH?
Anyway, I got-tuh-thinkin' some more and I've to the conclusion that we aren't all lazy and caffeine driven. Most of us don't deliberately waste time or recognize when we are. We are all just living and doing what we humans do best; surviving and occasionally missing opportunities to grow because we aren't perfect people. We follow trends and will surely wait 20 minutes in the Chick-Fil-A drive thru because the #5 is a ministry in itself but ya know what...? So are we. Every day, we can strive to stand in line for our own purposes and passions. We can make room for that extra stop along the way. It's time to make our dreams and gifts highly anticipated movements and solutions; Spark fires across the world…
Ephesians 5: 15-17 says "So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do."
God wants us to make time for the awesomeness that lives inside of us. Maximize every moment and expect greatness just like we do when we spend darn near $7 on one coffee. It's in you to live purposely and purposefully. Step by step, work on wasting a little less time obsessing and building other people's dreams and get eager about your own!! If your feet are going to hurt, it should be because you're running towards what God has called you to do. If you're going to stand, it should be because sitting on your call is too painful. If you're going to sigh in impatience, it should be because you're ready to speak up for what you believe in! Give your time, TIME! Do not miss another moment to excel, expand and elevate! Hashtag THAT!
-How ya like DEM pumpkins!!!-
Lol. Please, if you're going to drink a Pumpkin Spice Latte and experience someone else's frothy idea, let it be while you're typing your business plan or building your brand.
